ATV Riding Information For the Ouachita National Forest


It is important to know where you may legally ride your ATV or motorcycle through the Ouachita National Forest north of Broken Bow, Oklahoma.  Open routes may be changed annually, so always check with the Ouachita National Forest Visitor Office at the junction of Hwy 259A south to obtain a map and learn exact routes open for this use.  Learn more by logging on to http://www.fs.usda.gov/ouachita

Legal Riding Includes:​​​​​

  • ​​Riding on open, unpaved forest roads that are depicted on the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) available at the Ouachita National Forest Visitor Office on Hwy 259A south.

Illegal Riding Includes:

  • Riding out through the woods or across the forest floor
  • Riding on powerline or pipeline right of ways, alongside the highway, or on any paved or unpaved road outside the boundary of the forest.
  • Riding in streams or rivers.  Please cross at right angles - and don't go "mudding" up and down streams or other muddy areas.  Only cross where the road crosses the creek or river.
  • Riding on any route not depicted on the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) as an open route.

Have a great trip and understand that the rules and state laws are in place for a reason...protection of national resources and human lives!  Rules that may result in a fine if breached include

  • Riding on an undesignated route
  • Operators or passangers under age 18 not wearing a helmet
  • Carrying passangers on vehicles not manufactured for passengers
